Course policies and grade composition
Attendance: Regular attendance accounts for 10% of a student's final grade. Each student is allowed one absence, excused or unexcused. Each subsequent absence will result in a grade deduction: -0.7% for each absence.
Participation: Accounts for 10% of a student's final grade, awarded through the following activities:
Play-by-play assignment: Students will work in pairs to produce a five-minute play-by-play broadcast of a soccer or basketball game. Detailed prompts will be described in a separate section. The assignment accounts for 20% of a student' final grade.
Feature story analysis: Students will read and analyze a feature story published by Sports Illustrated magazine. Detailed prompts are described on a separate page. This assignment accounts for 10% of a student's final grade.
Exam: The exam will comprise a mix of true/false, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blanks, and essay questions. The final exam accounts for 50% of a student's final grade.
Participation: Accounts for 10% of a student's final grade, awarded through the following activities:
- "Career aspirations" slip (March 11);
- "News values" group in-class assignment (March 15);
- Discuss your feature story assignment (May 22);
- Write a caption for the picture (May 28);
- Draft the outline for an article (May 29);
- Feedback to student play-by-plays (May 29-31).
